Stuck in traffic I saw this terrifying sight. F ai r l y certain the rear tires were leaving the ground under m inor stop/go braking I don’t know how they got out of the driveway thinking the weird rocking was safe.

The rear suspension did not look happy.

People use long-drop draw bars on raised trucks and all of the forward forces generated during braking are translated directly into tongue weight.

This is every fifth camper I see being pulled in Utah canyons at 75 mph all summer. It's even better when there's ANOTHER trailer behind the camper with a SxS or ATV.

I think the rear of the bed is being bent down along with the frame under it.

So, from what my old eyes can see, it appears that they are using a load equalizer hitch, so the issue must be ball height. Improper ball height will increase the tongue weight drama tically. They need to get a height adjustable hitch to resolve this. I have towed a 29' travel trailer with 2 slide outs with my old F150. I have both the load equalizers and height adjustable hitch. I also have Hellwig add-a -leaf springs to handle the greater payload. Also, tires are run at max pressure listed on sidewall for highest payload capacity and which gives a reduction in sidewall squat under load.

I’m not a towing person but can tell that something ain’t right. While I understand the physics of towing and tongue weight and etc...

Like, the hitch on a truck is at a standard height, and the hitch on the trailer is at a standard height, right?  And you’d think that they wouldn’t make a fifth-wheel like that that couldn’t be towed by a standard 1/2ton truck?  It all just seems...idk, like there should be more prevention from this happening throughout the manufacturing process.

Maybe the truck is rocking (the stupid) Carolina squat and the trailer is setup for the reverse squat?

They may have enough money to buy a huge fancy trailer, but money can’t buy smarts!

I think y ou mean, “They may have been dumb enough to sign a 12 year loan on a trailer.”

Seriously, that’s a thing.  I went to an RV dealer once ... it was an ... experience.

N o, there is no standard height for either hitches or for the tongue height of trailers. They make lots and lots of different height and styles of hitches, so that if you’re doing it right everything rides level . That’s not a fifth wheel trailer. A fifth wheel trailer is the kind that the hitch is in the bed, over the rear axle. That kind of trailer is called a tag trailer . A camper that size should be pulled by, at minimum, a 3/4 ton truck. They do make smaller versions that a 1/2 ton truck could pull easily, but this isn’t one of them. Heck, I saw a Volvo Cross Country towing a small tag trailer style camper today, and doing it just fine.

This kind of shit is what happens when you believe the RV dealer when they tell you that your vehicle can tow this camper, just sign the loan document and you’re fine. I once saw a 27' camper being towed by a freaking Toyota Sienna. All I could think was, “How many transmissions have you blown?”

In this case, I think a second trailer would help with balance by pulling down the back of the first (and lifting its front).

Maybe that model trailer has the optional hot tub suit and it’s still full of water.

Nah, they just need to add a hitch to the back of the trailer so they can tow a boat.

What could possibly go wrong?

Yeah. I’m on my 3rd  cheap old camper. Holy hell are they built like hot garbage. At the prices I pay, I don't care. No way in hell would I ever buy one of these shit-shacks new!

Eh, doesn’t look that bad to me, maybe a little heavy but the angle of the trailer exaggerates it a bunch. Put a higher rise hitch on it and it oughta be fine.

They got really bad after the 2008 crash, all the mom and pops closed down. After the crash 70% of the industry was across the street from itself in Elkhart, Jayco is 10 minutes down the road, taking it up to 86%. I’ve seen them manufactured with incomplete plumbing (no P trap, just dumps into the cupboards. I’ve seen 40 volts AC in the 12vdc lines (your fridge will not like this) I’ve seen propane leaks bad enough to get people killed that do not show up on leakdown tests. ( that customer insisted that the temperature couldn’t drop below 85 because there were A LOT of scorpions in there that couldn’t get cold), one of the stranger requests. Weirdest thing I found was a replica pair of Gene Simmons dragon themed 7 inck kiss boots, in the bottom with the fishing rods.

A LOT OF SCORPIONS.

My latest is a ‘97 Coleman Fleetwood pop-up. Other than their known roof issues and problems from a leaky front truck, it’s a pretty solid camper. I only paid $1600, with working AC, so I’m happy.
